Description

Antique E. & G.W. Blunt Surveyor’s Compass
A phenomenal example of 19th-century American surveying equipment. This is a cased brass surveyor’s vernier compass, likely dating to the mid-19th century (1824-1866) from the prestigious firm of E. & G.W. Blunt of New York. The Blunts were highly regarded for their nautical charts and instruments, and their surveying compasses are a testament to the quality of American craftsmanship of the era. This model features a classic brass sighting plate with removable vanes and a silvered compass dial. The dial is clearly signed and includes the delicate, highly desirable engraving, a Fleur-de-lis at the North point, and a graduated outer ring. Importantly, it is a vernier compass, indicated by the markings (though the vernier mechanism itself is not clearly visible), which allowed for setting off the magnetic declination for more accurate readings. The instrument is further elevated by the inclusion of a separate telescopic attachment, which mounts to the main plate, turning a standard compass into a more versatile engineering or railroad compass—a rare and valuable accessory to find still paired with its compass. The entire ensemble is housed in its original, fitted, dark-stained wooden case. Condition: The instrument exhibits a beautiful, deep, aged brass patina consistent with its age and use in the field. The compass plate appears structurally sound. The glass over the compass dial is present, and the dial itself is in good visible condition with clear engravings. The wooden carrying case has a darkened, heavily worn finish, visible scratches, and nicks, but the brass hinges, simple hook-and-eye closures, and carrying handle are intact, indicating it has protected the instrument for over a century. The interior wood is a lighter mahogany-like color and shows wear and age. The level vials on the compass arm are present and good working condition. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town. H 3.5″, W 16″, D 7.5″ (Case Dimensions).
