Lot 1388a:
Description
This is a c. 19th-century American Vernier Compass manufactured by Stackpole & Brother (S. & G.) of New York, a preeminent firm in 19th-century scientific and surveying instruments. Attributed to the surveying of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. This heavy brass instrument is a prime example of professional surveying equipment from the era, featuring a large compass needle, a graduated vernier ring for high-precision angle measurement, and integrated leveling bubble vials. The ornate scrollwork and clear, stylized compass rose engraving further attest to the quality of S. & G.’s work. The instrument is secured within its original fitted wooden case (likely mahogany or a dark fruitwood).
The condition is fair to good for its age, displaying an attractive, untouched brass patina. The needle appears straight, and the engraving is still largely legible, including the clear S. & G. New York mark. The wood case shows expected wear, including a visible split on the lid, but remains intact and functional for display or transport.
