Lot 1366:
Description
Antique example of a French Model 1831 “Glaive des Troupes à Pied,” or short sword, which has been expertly cut down and re-profiled to a dagger length. The original M1831, nicknamed the coupe choux, was designed as a substantial 19-inch military sidearm inspired by the Roman gladius. The hilt is the correct solid brass with the characteristic ribbed grip and cruciform guard. The presence of the original hilt paired with the significantly shortened 8-inch double-edged blade suggests a common period modification, likely done by an armorer or veteran to create a more compact, utilitarian fighting knife or dirk after the original blade was broken or damaged in the field. This piece remains a fascinating military relic from the 19th century. The overall condition is antique, showing significant age and use, with a dark patina and pitting on the steel blade consistent with long storage. The brass hilt retains a nice aged patina and the ribbed grip is intact. The shortened nature of the blade is a condition factor but also adds to the unique history and narrative of the piece.
