Description

This is a beautiful example of an early American Arts and Crafts side chair from a key figure in the Mission movement, the Stickley Bros. Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1915, this chair features a high, four-slat back and a solid plank seat, exhibiting the rectilinear, sturdy lines characteristic of the period. It’s constructed from Quarter Sawn Oak, evident in the pronounced ray fleck visible in the grain, and retains its original or early dark reddish-brown stain. Crucially, the underside of the seat bears the authentic original brass tag reading “QUINT FURNITURE. Stickley Bros. Co. GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.”—the iconic mark of Albert and John George Stickley’s firm. The chair is in good, antique condition; there is notable wear and fading to the finish on the plank seat and stretchers, and the underside shows evidence of an old, visible split in the seat plank that was repaired with metal fasteners/wire reinforcing a cross-grain crack. All joinery appears tight, and the chair is structurally sound for use. H 38″, W 16.25″, D 15” NOTE: Pickup/transport required. Contacts available post auction.
