Description

This is a powerful piece of American folk art, skillfully hand-carved from a single, deeply colored piece of wood, likely a root or burl, to create a striking depiction of a Native American chief or warrior. The figure’s attire—particularly the bison horned headdress, and the heavy, textured mantle suggesting animal hide—combined with the spear, evokes the spirit of a warrior from a Plains or Eastern Woodlands tribe. The rustic lower portion maintains the wood’s natural, rough texture, contrasting with the smooth, detailed carving of the face and upper body. Originally exhibited and sold at the “Great Smokies Fine Arts Gallery,” in N. Carolina. This piece is part of the rich tradition of Southern Appalachian carving. The detachable, carved wooden spear, which features a feathered detail, sits in hand socket. H 19.5″(to top of head – approx. 23.25″ including spear), W 7″, D 7′. Please see photos. See photos.
