George Goulcher “Kentucky” Percussion Long Rifle. George Goulcher, of New York City, manufactured precision percussion locks and was known for making a wide range of components for gunsmiths that we unable to produce their own parts. This particular muzzle loading, .38 caliber, grooved bore rifle features a double trigger Goulcher percussion lock with the inscription “G Goulcher”. The lock features a hunting and floral scene inscription. The trigger guard is made of brass. The 36 ½ inch octagonal barrel has a fixed front fin sight and a rear, V notch fix sight. At the top of the barrel is inscribed, “J Hetrick”. John Hetrick was a native of Ohio, who owned a gun shop in Newark, Ohio and produced rifles during the mid and late 19th century. The one piece, tiger striped maple, stock is cracked and repaired with brass banding. The remainder of the stock shows normal wear and storage marks. The fore-end cap displays the hand inscribed name, “E.E. Martin”. The metal work shows an aged patina. The bore needs cleaning and has oxidation. The hammer and trigger actions are smooth and tight. No sign of a serial number. Overall, the rifle is a good display piece. The overall length of the rifle is 52 ½ inches. From Donley’s Wild West Town Museum.
