Description

1855 Eli Whitney muzzle loading, percussion cap rifle. Whitney was a major producer of rifles during the mid 19th century, and obtained several military contracts throughout the time. During the American Civil War, Whitney’s Model 1841 “Mississippi” Rifle played a big role during the war and saw service on both sides. This particular rifle has a 36 ½ inch part octagonal and part round smooth bore barrel. It has a one piece walnut stock that shows wear from storage and handling. The lock plate bears the markings “E. Whitney / US” and “N Haven / 1855”. The trigger guard and upper tang are inscribed with a floral design. The barrel, trigger guard, and tangs feature a gold plating. The ramrod is made of bronze and appears to be a modern reproduction. The metal work shows some oxidation but overall is clean. The bore needs cleaning and has oxidation. The hammer and trigger actions are smooth; however, the trigger mechanism needs adjustment/repair. No sign of a serial number. Overall, the rifle is a good display piece. The overall length of the rifle is 52 ½ inches.
