Description

Winchester Model 1876 lever-action repeating rifle. Often referred to by collectors as the “Centennial Model” as it was introduced at the time of the U.S. Centennial Exposition in 1876. It’s the big brother to the Model 1873, engineered with a larger, stronger receiver to handle the more powerful, longer cartridges suitable for North American big game. Winchester produced 63,871 of these rifles.

This particular rifle displays the markings “Model 1876” on the upper tang and caliber, “40-60” on the lifting block. The two-piece Walnut stock shows wear and nicks from use and storage. There is a crack in the butt stock, near the wrist. The rear butt plate trapdoor latch opens/closes smoothly. The octagonal barrel measures 28 – inches and has a missing front sight and has a fixed rear sight. It has a round, 15 shot magazine. The overall gun is 49-inches in length. The bore is clean, and the rifling is worn, showing less prominent edges. The metal exhibits remnants of its original factory finish with pitting and oxidation. The action moves smoothly and is tight. No visible serial number. From Donley’s Wild West Town Museum.
