Description

Remington Hepburn No. 3 Sporting Rifle. This highly regarded single-shot falling block action designed by Lewis Hepburn, is a late 19th century design and places it among the iconic rifles of the American West. This particular rifle is marked with the patent date “HEPBURNS PAT OCT 7th 1879” on the left side of the breach, beneath the loading port. The rifle features a heavy, 30.5-inch part octagonal and part round, .40 caliber rifled barrel. The barrel displays the markings, “E. REMINGTON & SONS.ILION.N.Y.” on the top of the barrel. The serial number “4876” is inscribed on the lower tang. The two-piece, walnut pistol-grip stock shows wear and nicks from use and storage, but overall solid with no cracks. The overall gun is 46 ¼ inches in length. The bore shows oxidation, and the rifling has pitting. The metal exhibits remnants of its original factory finish with pitting and oxidation. The action moves smoothly and is tight. From Donley’s Wild West Town Museum.
