Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1502:
Description
This modern, sepia-toned photographic print of Colonel William “Buffalo Bill” Cody, the legendary scout, bison hunter, and showman of the American West. The profile portrait is one of his most iconic and recognizable images from his later years, perfectly capturing his frontier mystique with his flowing white beard and mustache, the high-crowned Western duster hat, and a striking side-gaze. The man’s reputation and charisma are palpable even in this secondary print. It is housed in a simple, heavy black wooden frame with a wide, neutral-toned mat, allowing the dramatic sepia tones of the image to dominate. This was a popular image often reproduced for collectors. The condition of the print and mat appears excellent. The frame shows minor, expected scuffs and edge wear. The backing, composed of rustic pine boards, is aged and has some visible splits and wear, indicating a simple, early-style, perhaps custom, framing job. H 21.25″, W 17.75″, D 1″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
