Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1495:
Description
This is a fantastic grouping of three historical items related to the pivotal 1898 Omaha Indian Congress and early documentation of Native American leaders. The two focal pieces are rare, color-tinted photographic prints, both clearly displaying the 1899 Copyright by F.A. Rinehart and his assistant Adolph Muhr. Rinehart’s work is considered paramount in late 19th-century portraiture. The print featuring the man in the full feathered headdress is definitively identified as Little Wound Chief (Ogallala Sioux), a leader who attended the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition. The other print is clearly titled on the image as Gov. Diego Naranjo of Santa Clara Pueblo. The third item is a smaller, period sepia-toned postcard titled “Indians’ Camp at Devil’s Lake.” on the back of the cabinet card is photographer Jacob Berg of Grand Forks DT. The two large prints are preserved in museum display mats. The condition is good for its age, though all prints show signs of wear including tears, edge chipping, creases, small stains, and areas of discoloration/foxing, particularly around the edges and corners, consistent with being over 120 years old. H 9″, W 79″ (for largest prints). Cabinet card H 4.25”, W 6.5”. Used in the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
