Description

This is an evocative piece of American railroad history, likely a rare paper or cardboard sign created for interior or temporary use, mimicking the design of the more common porcelain enamel flange signs. It features the classic diamond shape and the iconic Railway Express Agency (REA) livery: an orange-red background with the lettering “RAILWAY” and “AGENCY” in black, and “EXPRESS” highlighted in gold or tan. Since this example is not porcelain enamel on steel, but rather a more fragile material, it was likely produced for an office, window, or short-term display, dating it possibly to the 1940s-1950s. The condition shows considerable wear, typical for a non-durable material. The surface exhibits heavy fading, extensive scuffing, scratches, and discoloration across the entire face. There is noticeable wear and creasing/chipping along the edges and near the top mounting hole, but it remains a wonderful, graphic collectible piece. H 14″, W 14″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
