Description

This is a beautiful example of an Antique Ribbed “Buttocks” or “Egg” Basket, a classic piece of Appalachian or Southern Highlands folk art. The term “buttocks” basket (or sometimes “melon” basket) refers to the distinct, rounded shape of the bottom, a construction method that was ideal for gathering eggs because it prevented them from rolling and cracking against the base. The construction is a traditional rib-type split construction using wide, thick white oak or ash splints woven over a bent wood hoop frame. This particular basket features a deep, well-rounded form, a sturdy bentwood handle, and the rich, dark patina characteristic of a piece that saw honest use on the farm in the late 19th or early 20th century. The condition is primitive and authentic; the splints have darkened with age and exhibit visible wear, fraying, and minor breaks, especially toward the base, but the structure remains completely sound. The rim and handle are firmly attached, securing the form. This is a very desirable size for collectors of primitive Americana. H 12″, W 15″, D 15″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
