Description

This is a phenomenal piece of American Arts and Crafts furniture, specifically an early Mission Oak (or Craftsman) five-shelf bookcase, identifiable by the brass tag on the underside as “Quaint Furniture” by Stickley Bros. Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Stickley Bros., founded by two of the Stickley brothers, offered a variety of pieces in the early 20th century, often competing with Gustav Stickley’s work, and this small-scale unit with its straight lines, through-tenon construction aesthetic, and exposed shelf supports is classic of the style and period (circa 1900-1915). The piece is constructed of beautiful, quartersawn white oak, showcasing the striking ray and flake figuring that is highly desirable in this era of furniture. The shelves appear to have slightly varying depths, as noted by the consignor. A faint handwritten number, “389-1748,” and a “JB” (or similar script) marking are visible on the underside of the top shelf. Condition is very good for its age, with a rich, warm patina and expected light surface wear, minor scratches, and rubbing consistent with over a century of use, but no immediately visible structural issues or major damage.
