Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1273:
Description
This is a stunning example of an Arts and Crafts period “knockdown” or sectional bookcase, likely produced by a major American manufacturer like Stickley, Limbert, or maybe even a regional competitor, given the unadorned, rectilinear form. The style is classic Mission Oak, utilizing quarter-sawn white oak with a rich, dark fumed finish, which highlights the striking medullary rays (flecks). The knockdown construction is characterized by the exposed, tenon-and-wedge joints visible on the side stiles, allowing the piece to be disassembled for easier moving—a hallmark of the period’s functional and honest design philosophy. The bookcase features five fixed shelves. It is in good overall condition, showing a deep, attractive patina commensurate with age and use. There is visible wear and slight damage to some of the exposed tenon joints, as well as some missing wedges(4). The finish shows minor fading and scuffing consistent with antique furniture. Dimensions: H 49″, W 35″, D 11″. NOTE: Pickup/transport required. Contacts available post auction.
