Description
This is an early 20th century or mid-to-late contemporary example of a Native American Plains-style war shield, constructed from stretched and laced animal rawhide (possibly buffalo or cow) with the hair-on for a visceral, traditional look. The shield’s face features a white painted handprint—a powerful symbol often associated with protection and victory—alongside feathers, a leather fringe with beads, and a horsehair tail. The edge is finished with a red fabric or felt wrap. Included in a separate bag are additional black horsehair pieces for further decoration or repair, and a small strip of red fabric. The shield presents in very good condition with appropriate age and patina to the hide and leather; the paint is strong, and all decorative elements appear to be firmly attached, though the included accoutrements suggest some potential for future maintenance or customization.
