Description
This is an impressive Northern Plains tomahawk head pipe, circa 1900, carved from sacred red Catlinite revered by the Plains and Woodland tribes alike. It features a tomahawk shaped bowl with bold carved decoration, most notably of a large buck and snake, on both sides of the blade. Wooden connecting piece and mouthpiece. The Catlinite stem features both rectilinear and round elements in series. A break on the stem (in the middle) has been repaired. Aside from the stem repair, in good condition. Dimensions: 20.5” long x 1.25” wide overall. Pipe effigy: 6.5” tall x 5” long. Stem17” long. See photos.
