Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1230:
Description
This is a striking example of a traditional Native American Blackware Pueblo pottery jar, likely from a New Mexico Pueblo such as Santa Clara or San Ildefonso, famous for this highly-polished style. The piece features a classic, round, olla-form body with a short, slightly everted neck and rim. The deep, lustrous black finish, achieved by smothering the fire during the firing process with organic material, is beautifully contrasted by a band of matte, unpolished reddish-brown/gray slip decoration around the shoulder, forming a sawtooth or pointed mountain motif. These blackware pieces are highly collectible examples of indigenous art. The pottery appears to be in overall good condition, showing expected light surface wear and minor scuffing commensurate with age, particularly across the high-gloss finish, as well as some minor residue or faint marks within the matte decorative band. H 7″, W 9″, D 9″. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
