Description

This is a Paiute, possibly Pit River, bottle basket likely dating back to the late 19th century or early 20th century. It is woven with a bold and contrasting geometric pattern, using bear grass and maiden hair fern stem. These baskets were crucial for carrying and storing water in the arid Great Basin region. Water baskets came in a variety of shapes, some resembling miner’s jugs, or soldier’s canteens. This particular basket has a handle, common for these types of water bottles, and a woven stopper. These were also valuable trade items among different tribes. A remnant of an older tag is present on the handle loop. Dimensions: 13” tall x 4” diameter. Please see photos.
