Description

Plains (likely Sioux) Native American bone breastplate. Bone breastplates were primarily used by plains tribes. These breastplates were not only decorative, but served as a symbol of status and in some cases were believed to offer spiritual protection. The number of bones and materials used would indicate and wealth and status of the warrior. Constructed of numerous strung bone hair pipe beads, separated by leather spacers. Features a central vertical band of metal beads and a string of red beads and bells at the bottom. Leather ties for attachment at the top. Overall good condition with noted break in the leather on the left side of the wearer roughly 2/3 of the way down. Repairable. Dimensions: 26” x12”. See photos.
