Lot 1153:
Description
Coiled Yokuts rattlesnake pattern basket with yarn and quail feather adornment, circa 1920’s. The Yokuts people (previously known as the Mariposas) lived in the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills in Central California. This tightly coiled basket features a two row pattern (each approximately 9 rows wide) mimicking a rattlesnake skin on both the interior and exterior of the basket. The exterior of the basket features green and white yard décor along the first few rows near the rim. Yarn is typical of baskets from the late 19th and early 20th century once wool yarn became readily available. It was incorporated because it added vibrant color to the baskets. Below that, on the central band are three rows of quail topknot feathers protruding from the basket weave. Quail feathers symbolize cultural narratives such as the quail’s role as a judge of fair play in Yokuts mythology. The black the basket has a flat bottom, 6” diameter and a total height of 4.25”.
