Tlingit rattle-top basket circa 1920’s. Let’s link it people of southeast Alaska are renowned for their finely twined basketry using spruce root and bear grass. This basket exemplifies their craftsmanship featuring a lid with a knob like top which traditionally contains small stones to create a rattling sound when shaken period. It is constructed using a two-strand twining technique with the primary material being spruce root harvested by women in the spring and fall cured and split and prepared for weaving. The geometric designs are achieved through false embroidery where dyed grass is wrapped around the left visible only on the exterior. The dyes used may be aniline dyes which became common in the 20th century period. The basket displays bold geometric designs and warm hues of brown and black the specific pattern appears to be a variation of horizontal bands which is a common design element and Tlingit baskets. Overall the basket is in good condition with the lid preparing to be slightly darker and exhibiting some separation on the upper edge of the lid. Dimensions: 6.5” tall x 5.5” diameter.
