Description
This is a fantastic piece of early mid-century tobacco advertising, an original Chesterfield Cigarettes die-cut embossed metal flange mount sign with a dynamic, multi-part design. The sign features a large, realistic representation of a Chesterfield Regular & King-Size package beneath a prominent, convex “Buy Here” header, which is shaped as an oval appliqué. Known as a “stack sign” or “two-piece sign” by collectors, this particular version is a wall-mounted flange display, likely intended for a general store, gas station, or cigar stand. The sign itself is lithographed metal, produced by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co., with the package design details clearly visible, including “Factory No. 25” and “District of Virginia” information on the side panels. The promotion of both “Regular & King-Size” strongly places its manufacture in the post-WWII 1950s era when the longer King Size became a popular option. The sign is in fair to good antique condition for its age; the vibrant red and yellow colors are still strong but exhibit significant oxidation, surface rust, and paint loss, especially around the edges and on the red background of the “Buy Here” oval. Aside from the bullet/puncture hole near the top, there are visible scuffs, scratches, and small dents, which are common for pieces that hung outdoors or in a store environment. Although the flange is bent, this can be flattened/straightened out and would display quite well. The overall patina is desirable to most collectors, lending character and authenticity. H 16.5″, W 12.5″, D 0.5″
