October Fall Classic
Lot 1110:
Description
This is an exceptional example of a classic Coca-Cola reverse-painted plate glass advertising sign, specifically the coveted “5¢ Coke 5¢ FOUNTAIN SERVICE” model. While similar designs were produced in porcelain enamel, the crisp lettering and depth of color indicate this is the more fragile and less common glass version, likely intended for a countertop or cash register display in a soda fountain or drugstore. The reverse-painting technique, with its gold-foil-like “5¢ Coke 5¢” lettering and contrasting red and black fields, gives the piece a wonderful dimensionality and vintage appeal. These signs date to the pre-1950s era when the five-cent price point was still ubiquitous. The condition is surprisingly strong for a glass sign of this age; the paint is remarkably intact with high gloss, showing only minor, expected flaking or specks around the very edges and corners, and perhaps some light surface scratching visible only upon close inspection. The glass itself appears free of any major cracks or chips, which is a rare feat for a piece designed for commercial use. H 4″, W 16″, D 0.25″
