Description

This is a stunning example of a late Victorian-era oil lamp (circa 1890s), designed in the opulent Aesthetic Movement or early Art Nouveau style, commonly referred to as a banquet lamp due to its stature. The body and base are constructed of heavily molded metal with an intact nickel plate finish, showcasing ornate foliate and acanthus leaf relief designs typical of the era, and featuring a highly decorative, twisted column. The lamp is fitted with a proper central draft burner, and the cap is clearly marked “ROYAL”, a common trade name used by several major lamp manufacturers of the period, possibly Edward Miller & Co. of Meriden, CT, or The Plume & Atwood Mfg. Co. The crowning element is the delightful cased glass shade, which features a beautiful light green fade to white and is hand-painted with delicate pink roses and green vines. Overall condition is very good for its age; the plating remains highly reflective with minor tarnish and light scratching consistent with polishing and age, but there is no significant plate loss visible. The wick raiser mechanism appears present and intact. The glass globe is in excellent condition with one chip at top rim, but no cracks, or repairs to the painting. Missing the glass chimney, a replacement can easily be sourced. The lamp is ready for display but has not been tested for functionality as an oil lamp (i.e., wick flow, seal integrity). H 29″, Globe diameter 10”.
