Description
Twentieth Century Carbide Bicycle Lamp
Outstanding example of an Early 20th Century Carbide Bicycle Lamp manufactured by the Twentieth Century Manufacturing Co., which was based in the United States. The clear and proud mark, “TWENTIETH CENTURY” on the top vent and “PATENTS AND DESIGNS PEND. MFG.” on the water reservoir, firmly dates this piece to the height of the acetylene lamp craze, likely around 1900-1905, just before carbide lighting was widely adopted for mining and early automobiles. This particular design, with its ornate, nickel-plated brass body, perforated gas housing, and handsome red and green facet-cut jewel lenses (one on the side, one on the top burner element), showcases a high-quality, top-tier model of the period. The hinged front lens and reflector mechanism are classic design features for focusing the intense acetylene beam. The lamp is in fair, uncleaned, “as found” condition, showing a heavy, desirable patina with significant loss to the original nickel plating, surface oxidation, and verdigris typical of a century-old outdoor item. Both side jewel lenses are present and appear original; the main front lens is in good condition. The carbide burner tip is visible, and the water feed components appear largely intact, though the lamp is untested for function. H 6.75″, W 4″, D 5″.
