This collection of medals represents some of the highest awards given to both uniformed service members and non-uniformed civilian individuals in the service of the US Government. The NASA medal is quite rare and the Army Certificate of Merit Medal is not recognized by many nowadays. At first glance, these medals may seem common. Once you delve into their history, you will see they are not. None are serial numbered, all are fascinating. 1)US Navy Cross. Second highest Navy award. Awarded for extraordinary heroism in combat. First award February 1919. Total awarded: approximately 5,400 as of 2017. Stamped “LI GI” on clasp. 2) US Army Distinguished Service Cross. Second highest Navy award. Awarded for extraordinary heroism in combat. First awarded March 1918. Total awarded: 13,462. 3)US Army Distinguished Service Medal. Awarded for Distinguished themself by exceptionally meritorious service to the Government in a duty of great responsibility. First award January 1918. Total awarded: approximately 7500+ 4) NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. Awarded for distinguished service, ability or courage. The recipient must have personally made a contribution representing substantial progress to the NASA mission, and the contribution must be so extraordinary that other forms of recognition would be inadequate. Second highest NASA award. This is the highest honor that NASA confers on a non-Government individual. Established 1959. Quite rare. Notable recipients include: Gene Roddenberry, William Shatner and Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Carl Sagan, and Nichelle Nichols. Back of medal has multiple engravings: “PUBLIC SERVICE” at top and “EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE” as well as “EXCEPTIO” and “XCE” “NAL”. Marked “MAC NY and 10K GF” on bottom edge. 5) US Navy Distinguished Service Medal. Awarded for exceptionally meritorious service in a duty of great responsibility. First awarded March 1919.
6) US Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal. Awarded for exceptionally meritorious service to the government in a duty of great responsibility. First awarded 1949 7) US Coast Guard Commendation Medal. First awarded 1943. This example stamped :LI -GI” on clasp. 8) US Armed Forces Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. The MOVSM recognizes those members of the military (active duty, reserve and National Guard) who perform substantial volunteer service to the local community above and beyond the duties required as a member of the United States Armed Forces. First awarded September 1993. This example stamped “GRACO-GI” on clasp. 9) Original US Army Certificate of Merit. Military decoration of the United States Army that was reintroduced and issued between the years of 1905 and 1918. An equivalent to the DSC and DSM. Before the creation of the DSC, this medal was the second highest honor below the Medal of Honor. Truly an uncommon medal. Not a reproduction. 10) NRA Marksman 50FT Award. Stamped “BLACKINTON” on back.
