US Model 1840 Light Artillery Sword Ames 1854. Blade generally bright with scattered staining/discoloration. No nicks on the blade, with the darker discoloration centralized around the scabbard throat. Blade is oiled, and does not look to have been sharpened or fussed with. Crisp markings US / A.D.K. /1854 on obverse and AMES MFG CO/ CHICOPEE/MASS on reverse ricasso. Missing the leather sword washer. Brass guard excellent with nice patina, grip has minimal cracks with no loss, full leather and perfect brass twisted wire. Paired with iron scabbard, splotchy dark patina with areas of bright finish. No dents in scabbard. Drag stamped A.D.K. Nice example of the M1840 artillery Sword. Blade Length: 32″. Overall Length: 37-7/8” “A.D.K. (Andrew D. King), which are the initials of the Government inspector at the time. King was an inspector at the Ames Factory 1840-1865. This sword was part of the Civil War and Indian Wars display at Donley’s Wild West Town Museum for 45 years.
