Description

1/4 plate Daguerreotype of a pre-Civil War [1840’s-1850’s] soldier holding a musket [unknown manufacture]. He is in a dress uniform and the gold buttons, trouser stripe and rank insignia are all added via paint embellishments. It is unclear if he is seated, but the gold trouser stripe suggests that he is. His facial features are clear and distinct. He is blankly staring straight ahead, and has very prominent sideburns, before they were referred to as such. Beside him, to his left, is his hat [shako?] with eagle and crossed cannons painted on. There is a gold star on his standing collar and the button patterns on the coat trend toward an earlier style uniform worn in the United States.
The daguerreotype is in a leather covered wooden case with embossed decoration. Red velvet lining on the interior of the case cover. Spine hinge is missing, but the small swivel locks are present. In good condition overall and presents well. See photos.
