Description

This a very fine autographed etching of General Ulysses Grant by Henry Gugler after John H. Littlefield on wore paper. It is autographed by Grant and he dated the signing and location. He wrote “Washington, Ill Jan. 9th 1868” and his signature read “U.S. Grant” over “General”. It is on wove paper under glass and matted size is 17.75″ x 22.25″ and wood frame that is 24″ x 29″. The etching was authorized by Congress and printed in 1867. At the very bottom, is reads “Entered according to the Act of Congress in the year 1867 by John H. Littlefield, in the Clerk’s Office of the District of Columbia. Photographic Copyright secured.” over “Printed by J.F. Gedney, Washington D.C. The ink writing has turned brown over time. The condition is very good with one 1.5” tear at middle left side edge. There is light brown discoloration from foxing throughout the print in clusters of spots. The framing was done very well in resent times and we tested the the glass if UV protection type and it appears to be UV protective glass but can not confirm. Frame shows some wear but looks very good. This is another historical important image and autograph for the center piece of any serious collector.
