Description
This is a very nice Union Kepi from the 2nd New York Mounted Rifles is named to Ira B Kemp and is ink marked “I. B. Kemp”. Research shows that Kemp was killed in action at Petersburg Virginia in July 1864. It is complete and the chinstrap buttons are domed New York seal. Chinstrap show minor wear and age. The dark “Mazarin” blue body is fine soft wool. It with some wear and moth tracks with some pinhead sized moth hole that are hard to find. The visor has a machine stitched reinforced edge made of cloth with a patent lacquer coating and shows even crazing and is in solid condition. The cap badge shows a soldered pinback pinned, running down the front. The interior has ribbed compressed paper sweatband, fine brown cotton lining. Sweatband is machine stitched to wool body. Has sewn in top board stiffener. The name is black and may be from ink pen or more likely a grease pencil like writing instrument. The overall condition is very good with very even age to all parts and materials. We encourage requests for more pictures. The future research may be bring much more historical value to this kepi.
