RARE! Civil War Era Sharps 1852 Slant Breech .52 “S. Sutherland” Carbine in very good vintage condition with wear and freckles, some pitting and 6x deliberate notches in the stock. The bore has some rust. Customer’s Research states it was sold to a Confederate cavalryman who upon dying, left to his doctor from who’s family it came! Presented here is Sharps Model 1852 carbine referred to as the ‘Slant Breech’ or ‘Sloping Breech’ model. The Model 1852 is one of an estimated 5000 such pieces made and is the forerunner of the more famous model Sharps carbines of the Civil War. The single-shot, percussion firearm is a .52 caliber, breech loading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. The 1852 date on this carbine signifies the patent year in which Mr. Sharps invented his ingenious pellet priming mechanical system and integrated it into the upper forward section of the lock plate. It also employs Sharps’ first side-hammer, percussion
“slanting breech” frame design. Referred to as a Model 1852 ‘Slanting Breech’ carbine, this specimen was produced by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company in Hartford, CT between 1853 and 1855. Key features this shortarm possesses is the long retaining spring on right in front of the ‘comma’ shaped lever hinge pin. Also has the staple-type sling ring on the left side of the carbine and no small spring stud mounted on the right side of near the forend. C&R Eligible S/N:nsn
