Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2254:
Description
This versatile collection from the Wabash, Indiana, area serves as a fascinating lithic record of regional history, featuring twelve projectile points and bifacial scrapers, a small fossil, and an animal tooth. As a specialist in Native American material culture, I find the assortment of percussion-flaked tools particularly noteworthy, showcasing varying styles and materials such as flint, chert, and larger stone celts that span multiple cultural periods from the Archaic to Woodland eras. Several pieces retain remnants of historical labels, providing a rare glimpse into their documented provenance as surface finds—a detail that significantly enhances their historical and collectible appeal. The lot is paired with a small, hand-woven split-willow basket featuring a distinctive flat-bottom weave and natural fibers. The lithic items exhibit expected field wear, including minor edge chipping and mineral staining, while the basket shows light oxidation and wear consistent with age. Largest lithic piece measures 4″ in length; smallest measures 1.5″ in length; basket measures H 1.5″, W 3.25″, D 2.75″. Please see photos for condition.
