US Civil War/Indian Wars M1855/73 Bayonet Rig
This historic lot features a U.S. Model 1855/1873 socket bayonet complete with its leather scabbard and belt rig, bridging the American Civil War and Indian Wars eras. The triangular spike bayonet features a distinct “US” stamp on the ricasso; millions of these surplus Civil War bayonets were cold-pressed post-1873 to fit the .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor rifles used on the Western frontier. The integrated leather frog and belt rig are highly characteristic of transitional Indian Wars-era infantry or militia gear. The metal components show a heavy, dark patina with pitting and oxidation consistent with age. The leather assembly displays significant age-related wear, surface cracking, and fragile stitching, but remains remarkably complete with its brass hardware intact. H 25″, W 13″, D 2″.
