Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2157:
Description
This exceptional pair of Native American soft-sole moccasins showcases classic Woodland or Great Lakes region styling, crafted in the mid-to-late 20th century. Made from supple, smoke-tanned buckskin, they feature vibrant floral beadwork on the vamps and cuffs using highly uniform, modern glass seed beads in red, yellow, green, and blue, all neatly framed by a black beaded border. Matching floral motifs adorn the heels, while the interior is lined with a crisp, machine-stitched commercial calico fabric featuring a geometric dot pattern typical of the era. Overall, the pair is in excellent vintage condition; the supple leather lacks the deep oxidation of 19th-century antiques and shows only authentic, light wear on the soles, while the modern thread keeps the beadwork remarkably tight and solid with no evident loss of material. H 3″, W 3.5″, D 9.5″. Please see photos for condition.
