Description
This striking Art Deco inkstand, dating from the circa 1930s, exemplifies the sleek and dramatic aesthetic of the period. Crafted from highly desirable Italian Portoro (black and gold) marble, the heavy, geometric base features a prominent pen trough, a matching hinged inkwell box, and is anchored by a beautifully detailed, patinated spelter or bronze figure of a stalking panther. Included with the set is a novel writing pen styled to resemble a closed umbrella. This piece is characteristic of French Art Deco desk sets. Objectively, the marble base and inkwell box show light surface wear, minor edge flea bites, and some oxidation to the brass hinges. Crucially, the internal glass inkwell insert is present, though the outer glass pot bowl is broken as shown in the photos. The umbrella pen shows typical age-related wear to its fabric-wrapped body.
