Lot 2317:
Description
This exceptional piece is a classic Imperial German reservist’s beer stein (Reservistenkrug), crafted in porcelain with a decorative pewter lid. It is not a decanter, but a commemorative vessel produced to celebrate a soldier’s completion of mandatory military service. Specifically, this stein commemorates service in the Field Artillery Regiment No. 27 based in Wiesbaden between 1907 and 1909. The body features vibrant, detailed lithographic scenes of artillery maneuvers and soldier life, complemented by hand-painted accents and a roster of fellow soldiers, while the lid is topped with a detailed, mounted cavalryman finial. A hallmark of these high-quality reservist steins is the internal lithophane base, which reveals a charming scene of a soldier bidding farewell to a woman when held up to the light—a sentimental touch cherished by collectors of military memorabilia. The item appears to be in very good overall condition; there are no visible cracks or chips to the porcelain structure. However, there is some minor loss to the painted surface, most notably in the blue enamel field located just above the name “Weber” near the top rim. H 12″, W 4.25″, D 4.25″. Please see photos for condition.
