Lot 226:
Description
A fantastic piece of turn-of-the-century mercantile history, this countertop display case was crafted by Geo. E. Allison of St. Louis, as evidenced by the original brass tag on the base. Allison was a known purveyor of high-quality store fixtures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This square, vertical case features a dark hardwood frame with glass panels on all four sides, allowing for 360-degree viewing of the contents. It features a hinged door for access and support rails for a shelf (though the interior glass shelf is currently absent). The top is solid wood, making it a sturdy and functional piece. This would make an exceptional housing for taxidermy, collectibles, or tobacco ephemera.
The piece shows honest wear commensurate with age, including surface scratches, scuffs, and finish wear on the wood, particularly the top. The glass panels appear intact, though one panel retains a partial “Jackpot Amusement” sticker. The interior glass shelf is missing. The structure remains sound and the door functions correctly.
