A Classic Opulence and General Antiques Auction ONLINE ONLY
Lot 225:
Description
A true survivor from the golden age of American mercantile history, this vertical countertop display case bears the brass identification tag of the “Excelsior Show Case Works, Canfield & Co Managers, 52 State St Chicago.” Likely dating to the late 19th or very early 20th century, the case features a metal-clad frame (likely nickel or German silver over wood) designed to maximize the visibility of goods inside. It retains its original maroon velvet or felt liner in the base, a classic touch for displaying jewelry, pocket watches, or fine notions. The top is a simple wooden board, and the piece stands on a molded metal base, offering a glimpse into the retail fixtures of the Victorian era.
100The item is in fair to poor “as found” condition, showing significant signs of age and wear. The metal cladding exhibits general oxidation, tarnish, and some separation from the underlying wood structure. There is notable damage to the upper frame joinery, specifically at the corners where the wood is splintered, and a piece of the molding is missing (see detailed photos). The wooden top is unfinished, stained, and weathered, suggesting it may have originally had a cap or was built into a larger fixture. The interior felt is worn and dusty. The glass panels appear intact but are dirty; however, the structural integrity of the frame is loose and will require restoration.
