A Classic Opulence and General Antiques Auction ONLINE ONLY
Lot 215:
Description
This is an exceptional example of Arts and Crafts furniture, a slat-back rocking chair by the renowned L. & J.G. Stickley company, confirming its manufacture in Fayetteville, New York, circa 1905-1920. The form is quintessential Mission style, featuring robust, rectilinear quartersawn oak construction with the exposed tenons and pegged joints that define the aesthetic championed by the Stickley brothers. This rocker features a straight back with three horizontal slats and a comfortable, square, drop-in seat. The seat is currently fitted with a distressed tanned leather over-upholstery, secured with decorative tacks. The wood exhibits a beautiful, dark-fumed patina, suggesting a well-maintained, original finish, though there is typical age-related wear, including minor scuffing to the rockers and edges. The leather is heavily patinated with cracking, fading, and some small tears, especially around the edges, but the overall structure is solid and sound. H 30″, W 17″, D 23″.
