Description

This is a quintessential example of American furniture manufacturing from the late 19th century, showcasing the distinctive asymmetry and stylized ornamentation of the Aesthetic Movement with Eastlake influences. Constructed likely of walnut or stained hardwood, the desk features a fascinating hallmark of the era: the Knapp joint (also known as the pin-and-scallop) visible on the drawer sides, a machine-made joinery used almost exclusively between 1870 and 1900. The design includes a “step-down” gallery top with a paneled cabinet on the left and open, spindle-supported shelves with mirrors on the right. The slant-front desk opens to reveal a fitted interior with cubbies and drawers, resting above a lower cabinet base with incised geometric carving. A vintage handwritten list of names was found inside and is included. Condition is fair to good antique with significant structural repairs required. The most notable issue is the right front foot, which has broken off at the base; the detached block and caster are included with the lot for repair. Additionally, the wooden support for the upper right gallery shelf is fractured and separated, compromising the stability of that shelf. The decorative metal escutcheon for the drop-front is currently detached but present. The green felt writing surface is heavily worn and stained. General surface wear, scratches, and age-related fading are present throughout the finish. One key is included. H 70″, W 32″, D 18″
