Lot 198:
Description
This is a fine example of early 19th-century portraiture, an oil on canvas depicting a stout, middle-aged gentleman with receding grey hair and a high white stock. The portrait is housed in its original oval gilt-wood frame, which features a detailed egg-and-dart style border. The reverse of the canvas reveals a stencil for the canvas maker: “THOS STEVENS, Looking Glass & Picture… Art Reposit… Brooklyn, New York”. The frame’s stretcher has corner braces and a cross brace for stability. The portrait exhibits a dark, chiaroscuro-like background, drawing focus to the sitter’s face and white attire. Condition is good for its age; the canvas shows craquelure consistent with oil paint aging, and there are some minor surface scratches on the paint. The gilt frame has typical wear, including small losses to the gesso and gilding. The wooden support on the reverse shows wear and age. H 27″, W 23″, D 2”.
UPDATE! Painting was damaged during a move. It now has a small puncture hole in the chin area. Pease see photos. Price reduced to sell!
