Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1237:
Description
This striking textile appears to be an older Navajo-style weaving, likely a runner or small rug, based on the strong, geometric design characteristic of Southwestern Native American artistry. The pattern features prominent, nested diamond motifs in the center and at the ends, executed in a traditional color palette of natural, undyed wool (creams and tans) contrasted with brown, black, and accents of deep red/magenta. A significant design element is the central stylized cross or “Germantown cross” pattern, flanked by arrow motifs, suggesting an earlier or traditional influence, possibly from the late 19th or early 20th century. The textile is woven with hand-spun or commercially spun wool, exhibiting a coarse, durable texture suitable for floor use. The condition is fair/good for its age, showing noticeable fading, some visible discoloration/staining (especially a pale turquoise stain near the top center), and wear to the edges and fringe areas consistent with heavy use and age. There are no obvious major tears visible, but the fabric has been stretched or warped slightly, and the binding edges are frayed. H 50.25″, W 29″
