Description
1890’s Hopi hand woven coiled plaque. Consisting of 12 tightly woven spiraling coils, with this particular piece featuring a geometric pattern. The coil wraps remain intact with nearly all present. The outer coil, which constitutes the the rim of the basket has some loss of material however, this does not affect the look of the piece, but does reflect its age and fragile nature. Trays were especially significant in Hopi culture for wedding ceremonies as gifts. A wonderful example manufactured before the rise of tourist trade art of the 1930’s. Dimensions: Diameter 15.75 depth 2.5″.
