The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 1044:
Description
This is an exceptional lot of WWII aviation ephemera centered on Colonel Robert K. Morgan (1918-2004), the pilot of two of the war’s most historically significant bombers. The centerpiece of this collection is a pair of signed, numbered, limited-edition drawings on paper—one of the B-17 Flying Fortress $Memphis Belle$ (European Theater) and one of the B-29 Superfortress $Dauntless Dotty$ (Pacific Theater). The B-17 drawing is signed by both Pilot Robert Morgan and Co-Pilot James “Jim” Verinis, a crucial pairing since the $Memphis Belle$ was one of the first B-17s to complete 25 missions. The B-29 drawing, representing the lead aircraft for the first B-29 raid on Tokyo, is signed by Colonel Robert Morgan. The lot includes the two signed/numbered drawings (the B-29 is No. 162/200), a large group photograph of military personnel, a newspaper clipping from The Stars and Stripes (October 1945), and various informational cards and historical printouts. The drawings appear to be in good, well-preserved condition, showing minor expected discoloration and light creasing typical of stored paper media. The signatures are clear and strong. Part of the John Bannister Collection. H 12″, W 17″ (estimated total packaged size). Please see photos.
