The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 1028:
Description
Here we have a battlefield relic U.S. Springfield M1 Garand rifle receiver and barrel with serial number 256805. The serial number dates the rifles manufacture to January/February 1944. This relic was discovered in 1998 within the dunes of the Easy Red Sector of Omaha Beach—the site of some of the most intense fighting during the D-Day landings. The relic is mounted on a rustic wood plank “OMAHA BEACH” stenciling and a segment of period-style barbed wire. A plaque is attached to the display, describing the relic and its discovery. The metal components are heavily oxidized and pitted, consistent with long-term exposure to the coastal elements and sand, while the wooden stock is entirely absent, common with excavated battlefield finds. This piece represents a significant historical artifact of the 20th century’s most pivotal military operation. Please see photos for overall condition. Part of the John Bannister Collection. L 33″, W 7″, D 2.5″
