This is a very nice example of a mid-war Richmond Va. production Confederate kepi. The body is a very muted butternut brown colored denim twill material. The chinstrap button are chicken neck Union eagles with unmarked backs. The visor has re-enforced edge and crazing on both sides and is strongly held in place. The lining is a very interesting strips and dots civilian female cotton material. The sweatband is still supple and shows wear, stains from hair oil and salt from sweat. The cardboard crown is inside the cloth body. The hat body shows wear, fraying and small holes all over. The front may have has an insignia because of the wear holes but we think not. This hat shows the “ersatz” quality of the fabrics used but the quality of manufacturing is still very good. Overall condition is good plus with stains, fraying, bug holes and in some parts, worn down to nap. This was one of the center piece hats in the consignor’s collection and is extremely rare and historical.
