Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2242:
Description
This lot features two Native American style stone effigy pipes carved from dark, dense stone. The first is a sleek zoomorphic pipe featuring a stylized bird or animal head carving at the bowl end, while the second is a distinct L-shaped geometric pipe with a detailed bird figurine perched along the stem. Both pieces showcase a primitive hand-carved aesthetic reminiscent of Mississippian or Eastern Woodlands cultural artifacts, though they lack definitive maker’s marks or tribal identifiers to confirm prehistoric antiquity. Both items exhibit visible signs of surface wear, including heavy scuffs, superficial scratches, minor pitting, and light chipping around the rim edges and bases, though they remain structurally intact. Measurements: H 2.5″, W 6.5″, D 1.5″ (Bird pipe) and H 3.75″, W 5.75″, D 1″ (L-shaped pipe). Please see photos for condition.
