Description

This premier historical archive belongs to Hudson “Hud” Thurber (1842–1928), a dedicated veteran of the 16th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, sourced directly from his descendants. The centerpiece is a stunning, high-grade chromolithographed “G.A.R. & War Record” (IV Edition, 1896) by J.M. Vickroy & Co. This vibrant record meticulously documents Thurber’s four-year journey, from his 1861 enlistment at age 18 to his honorable discharge in 1865. It highlights his presence in the war’s most brutal theaters, including Shiloh, Corinth, and the pivotal Siege of Atlanta. The archive is further enriched by a framed “Certificate of Service” and a framed family portrait (enlargement) of Thurber at his Monroe Center, Wisconsin homestead circa 1885. Expertly preserved within the primary frame is a comprehensive genealogical dossier containing seven documents: his official death record (citing apoplexy), a detailed obituary, and personal family correspondence. These records reveal the man behind the uniform—a pioneer who lied about his age to enlist, a lover of horses, and a community pillar who ran lumber up the Wisconsin River. This is a fully documented life story of a pioneer-soldier. The lithograph remains remarkably bright with only minor age-toning; all frames are structurally sound with light contemporary wear. H 31.25″, W 26″, D 1″ (Large Frame); H 14″, W 12″, D 1″ (Certificate); H 5.75″, W 9.5″, D 0.75″ (Photo). Please see photos for condition. Note: Pickup/ Transport required.
