Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2216:
Description
This expansive historic collection of over 80 dug early 20th-century relics is beautifully organized and presented inside two protective glass-top Ryker display cases included with the sale. The assortment is highlighted by a stamped brass souvenir tag from the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, an elegantly hand-carved folk art wooden spoon with a horse-head handle, and an inscribed wooden logging camp stake from 1933. Newly highlighted artifacts in this extensive metal detecting lot include three excavated brass or copper-alloy finger bands/rings, silver-toned metal sewing thimbles, an arrowhead shard, and three heavily oxidized rimfire or centerfire metallic cartridge cases complete with cast lead bullets showing severe corrosion and casing splits. The remaining balance of the lot contains an iron padlock, pewter spoons, white clay pipes, apothecary bottles, a lead printing plate shard, and a large variety of military and civilian uniform buttons. All items are in stable, “as-found” excavated condition with expected rust, heavy tarnish, verdigris, soil staining, and weathering from age. The cases provide a clean, secure presentation for the collection, with the total grouping measuring approximately H 4″, W 24″, D 16″. Please see photos for condition.
